Quick guide to cleaning your bike
This simple step-by-step guide to clean your bike gives you a chance to check it over for any signs of wear or damage helping to make sure you get more trouble free rides.
Prop your bike up on or against a garden bench, so you can access all areas comfortably.
Step 1: Prepare a cleaning bucket
Fill a bucket with, warm water and add washing up liquid. We will use a hose pipe for rinsing down.
Step 2: Wash wheels
Ideally take off your wheels to clean the bike thoroughly, but a good wash with them on is better than no wash at all. Use a soft-bristled brush to scrub tires, spokes, and rims, checking for any damage.
Step 3: Clean the Chain
Place an old blanket on the ground and turn your bike upside down to apply a degreaser to the chain. Do this by turning the cranks to coat every link. Let it sit 10–15 minutes, then rinse.
For stubborn grime, scrub lightly with soapy water and a sponge or using an old tooth brush.
Step 4: Tackle the Drive train
Use a stiff-bristled brush to clean chain rings and pulleys. An old toothbrush helps reach tight spots. For the cassette, apply a few drops of soap, scrub with a brush, then rinse.
Step 5: Clean the Frame
Use a sponge dipped in soapy water to wash the frame from front to back. If your bike has caliper brakes, makes sure they are clean and free from debris.
Step 6: Reassemble and Lubricate
Finally, dry your bike with a soft cloth or let it air-dry before applying chain oil.
Happy cycling
